Beihang University (BUAA)

Beihang University was originally founded in 1952 as BUAA when Peiyang University, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, Sichuan University, Yunnan University, North China University, Northwestern Engineering College, and Southwest Aeronautical Institute. In 1953, the University relocated to its own campus located at BaiYanZhuang Village in Haidan District in the Western suburb in Beijing. At first, the University had departments dedicated to four distinct majors to include: Airplane Technology and Airplane Design in the Department of Airplane Engineering, and the Engine Technology and Engine Design in the Department of Airplane Engine Engineering. In the 1950’s, Beihang University was included as priority for development during China’s 7th Five-Year Plan between the years of 1986-1990). In the 8th Five-Year Plan, it was listed in the top 14 for priority development and this continued as the 9th Five-Year Plan commenced. When Project 211 for Higher Education began, Beihang University was also developed. For this reason, it has a very specialized program for advanced Engineering students to pursue. The University has undergone several name changes from “Beijing Institute of Aeronautics” to Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics” to finally, Beihang University. Beihang University offers many Master’s Degrees in China.
Notable Campuses & Programs Around China
In total, Beihang University has 59 Undergraduate programs, 38 Master’s Degree programs, 21 Doctoral programs, and 17 Postdoc stations. The University currently has over 1,000 international students. In 2005, the Grande Ecole of Engineering and the Ecole Centrale from France collaborated together to form the Ecole Centrale de Pékin. This program was designed to attract the most prestigious students within the Engineering field. In 2018, the French Civil Aviation University has also signed an agreement with the University in order to found a Civil Aviation University in Hangzhou. Prestigious partnerships such as these combined with Beihang’s modern facilities, make Beihang University one of the best universities to attend within Mainland China for Engineering.
In addition to their partnerships with French Engineering institutions, Beihang University regularly works with 152 different universities and research institutions from 40 countries around the world, particularly in Canada, Germany, Russia, France, Sri Lanka, the UK, and the United States. Students that attend Beihang University can greatly benefit from the lectures that take place on campus for further learning and networking. In 2017, there were over 1,000 different lectures from foreign experts in the Engineering field.
What makes Beihang University extra special for international students is that it is one of the few universities in China that provides the majority of Master and Doctoral programs in English. It also has created many different Bachelor’s programs in English. As a result, the University has attracted more than 9,000 students from 80 distinct countries since 1993.
