Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU)

Beijing Jiaotong University is a Double First Class Discipline University in Beijing with a focus on transportation systems, communications, and engineering. As one of the first Chinese universities to open its doors to international students, Beijing Jiaotong University has a rich history of international cooperation and offers foreign students many exciting opportunities.
Beijing Jiaotong University was founded in 1909 by the Qing Government. The university’s original mission was to foster the development of a railway network in China. Over the last 100 years the school has merged and split with various institutions throughout China before reaching its current form (and name) in 2003. The campus is located in central Beijing’s Xizhimen area and is known for its beautiful ginko trees and impressive library.
BJTU boasts 14 academic departments, 22 research centers, 39 laboratories, and 55 societies. The university is comprehensive and offers 58 undergraduate programs in fields as diverse as graphic design and statistics, but the vast majority of undergraduate degrees relate to the university’s core focus—transportation. The transport system simulation laboratory and the transportation automation laboratory of BJTU are the most advanced laboratories of their kind in China and well-respected around the world.
BJTU has a long and proud tradition of international cooperation. Today, Beijing Jiaotong University offers five dual-degree programs with international universities. Additionally, in 2016 BJTU established a joint institute with Lancaster University—the Lancaster University College at Beijing Jiaotong University. This institute is located at BJTU’s Weihai campus in Shandong (which was established in 2015).
There are three undergraduate dual-degree programs: The Program on Nano-Materials and Technology between Beijing Jiaotong University and University of Waterloo, Canada; the Management Information Systems (MIS) between Beijing Jiaotong University and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT); and the Mechatronics between Beijing Jiaotong University and University of Wollongong, Australia.
Master’s students may select from the following dual-degree programs: the program in Entrepreneurship and Innovative Ventures between Beijing Jiaotong University and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT); or the program in Software Engineering between Beijing Jiaotong University and EPITECH, France.
As the world urbanizes at an unprecedented rate, international students should consider looking to Beijing Jiaotong University to gain insights into the processes affecting transportation and communication. With over 100 years of experience in the study of transportation and strong international connections, BJTU is the place to study for students interested in this burgeoning field.
