Chongqing University was founded in 1929. During Japanese Occupation, Chongqing was one of the only industrial cities that was not seized by Japan. For this reason, the University was allowed to continue operation. In 1942, the University grew substantially and grew to include six colleges in Science, Liberal Arts, Law, Engineering, and Medicine. Today, it is one of the larger academic institutions in China that is well known for its diverse course offerings, impressive research laboratories, and numerous foreign exchange programs. Chongqing University has a total area of 3.65 square kilometers that is divided into four distinct campuses. Chongqing University currently has 28 schools, a graduate school, the City College of Science and Technology, the College of Networking Education, and the College of Continuing Education. The student population has now reached 50,000 students that is comprised of 20,000 Master’s/Doctoral students and 30,000 Undergraduate students. In addition, the University has 24 mobile workstations for Postdoctoral studies, 133 Doctoral Programs, 256 Master’s Programs, 18 Professional Master’s Degree Programs, 89 Bachelor’s Degree Programs. Within these disciplines degrees such as: MBA, EMBA, MPA, and Master of Engineering are offered.
Chongqing University has an impressive library that has 3.90 million volumes, 6,000 Chinese and foreign periodicals, 2.0 million volumes of e-books, and 5 electronic reading rooms. In addition to the library collection, there are 29 research laboratories available on campus for both faculty and students to benefit from.
In terms of international cooperation, Chongqing University has established exchange programs with over 100 institutions in over 20 countries to include: Russia, South Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Italy, Germany, England, France, and the United States. Due to the international nature of the campus, it is possible for both Chinese and international students to have a very unique experience when studying at Chongqing University
