Dalian Maritime University was founded in 1909 when the Nanyang Institute in Shanghai established a Shipping Management Section. The official modern Dalian Maritime University that is known today was founded in 1953 through the merging of Shanghai Nautical College, Northeast Navigation College, and Fujian Navigation School. Dalian Maritime University was the first Maritime University established in China. In 1983, the Asia-Pacific Region Maritime Training Center was established by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)and the IMO. In 1985, a distinct branch of the World Maritime University (WMU) was also established at Dalian Maritime University.
