Fudan University was founded in 1905 during the late Qing Dynasty. The university was founded by the Jesuit priest, Ma Xiangbo, who also founded the Aurora University and the Fu Jen Catholic University. The name “Fudan” was selected by Ma Xiangbo from a passage in The Classics of History which refers to the pursuit of greatness. Fudan achieved this greatness early on, and by the early 1920s was offering education from the middle school level through doctoral studies. The reputation for academic excellence that Fudan University achieved in its early period has continued to this day.

Today, QS World University Rankings ranks Fudan as the 43rd best university in the world and 11th in Asia. Fudan is ranked as one of the top five universities within China by all major university ranking systems. Fudan is the most selective school in China, with less than 0.2% of Chinese applicants being accepted—making Fudan three times more selective than the American Ivy League Universities!

Fudan offers over 70 undergraduate majors, which are organized into seven basic categories. Each major requires students to complete a mixture of general education, specialized education, and basic arts and sciences—reflecting the university’s commitment to developing well-rounded students. Fudan’s graduate programs are also renowned. Since the reestablishment of their graduate department, Fudan has produced 55 of China’s most outstanding graduate theses.

Fudan University is the most diverse academic institution in China. In the 1950s, Fudan was one of the first Chinese universities to open its doors to foreign exchange students. In 2003, Fudan became the first Chinese university to open a foreign student exchange center. Today, Fudan has more international students than any other comprehensive university in China. Every year approximately 7,000 students from over 120 nations study at Fudan, many of them enrolled in degree programs. Fudan offers 15 English-taught masters programs, including Chinese politics and Diplomacy and Chinese economics. Fudan also offers an English-taught bachelor’s program in clinical medicine, as well as an undergraduate degree in Chinese as a foreign language. The university has a dormitory building set aside for international students, and there are 19 foreign exchange student clubs on campus. As a member of Universitas 21, Fudan has connections to prestigious research universities worldwide.
