The Chinese Space Program is one of the most active and technologically advanced astronautics programs in the world. NUAA was founded in 1952. Over the last 66 years, it has gradually evolved from a teaching-oriented school focused around aviation and engineering to a research-oriented institution with key programs in national defense technology and aerospace sciences. As one of the first Chinese universities to begin offering master’s and doctoral degrees, NUAA has a proud history of postgraduate study and boasts amongst its alumni famous mathematicians and physicists Sifeng Liu, Jeffery Yi-Lin Forrest, and Hornsen Tzou.
Today, NUAA offers 54 undergraduate programs, 80 postgraduate programs, and 16 post-doctoral programs. All have been open to international students since 2005, and each year the university welcomes about 1100 international students. International students may apply for a wide range of scholarships, most of which offer 10,000 RMB/year for bachelor’s students and 20,000 RMB/year for graduate students!
NUAA’s students have produced many outstanding achievements in the last few years. In 2014, NUAA built three unmanned ornithopters, in 2016 an aircraft designed by NUAA students won the 33rd annual American Helicopter Society award, and in 2017, NUAA developed the world’s largest amphibious aircraft.
NUAA has formal ties with universities in 19 countries across Asia, Europe, and North America. NUAA hosts international conferences, and their professors are active in international exchange throughout the world. The university has an office of international collaboration, a college of international studies, and contact persons for potential and current international students.
Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics is located in the historic walled capital of Nanjing, a city brimming with history and culture. NUAA has two campuses—the Ming Palace Campus is built on the ruins of a Ming Dynasty imperial palace, and the Jiangjun Road Campus is within the Nanjing economic and technological development zone.

A typical student dormitory flat consists of 3 to 4 air conditioned bedroom and a common living room equipped with a TV. Students will have easy access to basic necessities like Internet, telephone, hot/cold shower, kitchen, washing machine etc. Check-in is allowed one week before semester begins. Electricity may be extra at approximately US$100 per year.
