Shanghai Jiao Tong University was founded in 1896 as Nanyang Public School when the Guangxu Emperor issued an imperial edict. Since it was founded, it is consistently compare with MIT and has been labeled as “The MIT of the East” since the early 1930’s. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a C9 League University, which is an equivalent of America’s Ivy League universities. The word “Jiao Tong” translated means transportation and/or communication. The University’s foundation came from the Ministry of Posts and Communications during the late Qing Dynasty. Shanghai Jiao Tong University has several campuses to include: the Xuhui Campus, Minhang Campus, South Chongqing Road Campus, Qibao Campus, Shangzhong Road Campus, and Fahuazhen Road Campus. The main campus is the Xuhui Campus that also has a very large center for international students to study. International students also study at the Minhang Campus during their time at Shanghai Jiao Tong University as well. What makes the Minhang Campus special is that top companies such as: Intel, ST Microelectronics, Microsoft, and Sandisk, have their research and development centers there, which creates a fantastic internship and alumni network for students. The South Chongqing Road Campus mainly hosts the Medical portion of the University. The Qibao Campus primarily focuses on the Agricultural College. The former Zhangzhong Road Campus has been sold to Shanghai High School; however, the Fahuazhen Road Campus is where the Economics, Management, and School of Continuing Education are located.
