Shanghai is the commercial and financial center of China and one of the most important cities in the global economy. At the heart of this thriving city, The Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) offers internationally-competitive degrees in economics, business, and finance.

In 1917, Nanjing Higher Normal School established a commerce program. This program was later relocated to Shanghai and by 1921 it had evolved into an independent university now known as Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. The university had an international outlook from the beginning; in fact, in 1923 11 out of the 16 Chinese faculty members had been educated in prestigious universities abroad, such as Harvard University and Columbia University. Even today, the vast majority of SUFE’s tenure-track faculty received their PhD’s from renowned universities abroad.

This spirit of international exchange has had a profound effect on SUFE’s development. The university frequently collaborates with the World Bank Institute, the International Monetary Fund, and the United Nations Development Fund. SUFE has established relations with monetary and financial institutions around the world, including the Chartered Insurance Institute, and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. SUFE’s MBA programs are certified by AMBA and SUFE is also a member of the AACSB. SUFE offers six joint-degree programs with universities around the world in the subjects of economics, real estate management, accounting, finance, international business, and international economics and trade.

Shanghai University of Finance and Economics boasts consistently impressive rankings. SUFE was ranked number one in the “finance and economics” category by Netbig every year from 2003 to 2008. Tilburg University’s Economic Schools Research Ranking rated SUFE the third best school in China and 120th in the world.

SUFE currently has 1,575 faculty members and 12,666 undergraduate students. There are currently 1,615 international students enrolled full-time at the university. International students may choose from a wide variety of English-taught programs including a masters program in International Finance and Regional Cooperation. SUFE also offers a doctoral program in Economic Law taught in English. Students may also choose to enroll in business-specific language programs, such as the year-long course in Business Chinese.

SUFE has four campuses in Shanghai. The main campus is located downtown in Yangpu District and is where most undergraduate programs are administered. Many of the MBA students study at the North Zhongshan Road campus.

As China’s economy continues its rapid growth, it will become increasingly important for financiers and businessmen to understand China. Seeking a degree at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics is an excellent way to get a head start on this trend.
