The University of Science and Technology Beijing is world-renowned for its programs in metallurgy and material sciences. USTB was formed in 1952 and originally known as the Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Technology. Since 1979, USTB has established formal collaboration with over 70 universities worldwide. Many of USTB’s professors were educated in Europe or the Americas and many of them had extensive careers abroad before returning to China to lecture at the University of Science and Technology Beijing. USTB was one of the first Chinese universities to accept foreign students and has been a member of the Chinese Government Scholarship Program for international students since 1954. Since that time, over 2000 students from 74 countries have graduated from USTB.
University of Science and Technology Beijing’s fame stems largely from its contributions to research. Between 1978 and 2002 almost 800 of USTB’s research projects were awarded prizes at the state or regional level. The university has been granted 84 patents, five of which have made a profit of over ten million RMB. Since 2004, USTB’s research fund has grown at a staggering rate of nearly 100 million RMB per year.

It is somewhat removed from the main university district and offers a more suburban setting.
