Wuhan Unviersity (WHU)

Wuhan University is located in Hubei, China and was founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong who was the governor of the Hunan and Hubei Provinces during the end of the Qing Dynasty. The University was formerly known as the Ziqiang Institute. When the University was first founded, it originally included courses in Mathematics, Nature, Business, and Chinese. Later on, the Institute of Minerals and the Institute of Chemical with Nature Science and Engineering, the program offerings grew considerably. Additionally, the Chinese course offerings were extended to English, French, Russian, German, and Japanese. When the Zigiang Institute moved to Dongchang kou, Wuchang, the name was changed to Foreign Languages Institute and expanded its course offerings to History, Geography, Law, Mathematics, and Communication. Due to uprisings in 1911 the school closed until it was extended in 1922-1924 to teach Education Philosophy, Chinese, English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemical, History and Sociology, Biology, and Geography. During this time, it was renamed Wuchang State University. In 1926, Wuchang State University merged with several schools to include: Wuchang State Business University, Hubei University of Medicine, Hubei University of Law, Hubei Arts & Humanity University, and Wuchang Private Chinese University. As a result, in 1928, the University was formally renamed Wuhan State University. Due to limited number of dormitory rooms, the School of International Education does not offer reservation service for the September intake of self-financed international students. Electricity fee is not included in the prices. Buildings may charge other fees not listed here. You supply your own bedding, though it can be purchased locally.
